A cast-iron table can be an appealing step up from a folding bench, but the purchase is rarely just a choice between two metals. You are also choosing how the surface is supported, how extensions join, and which fixtures will hold your work.

Compare actual models. A machined cast block and a basic sheet-steel portable table are so different in purpose that a material-only comparison obscures the decision.

Compare shape and working faces first

Langmuir describes ArcFlat as a nodular cast-iron block measuring 36 × 24 × 4 inches, with a 3/8-inch top. The overall depth is not four inches of solid material. Its block construction is part of the product you are comparing.

Steel systems can also offer several working faces. Strong Hand’s Alpha 28 tabletop uses 25 mm plasma-nitrided steel plates and a five-face design. These examples show why side access, underside access and fixture mounting should sit beside material in your comparison sheet.

Make the accuracy claims comparable

A tolerance stated over a local patch of surface cannot be ranked directly against one stated over a whole tabletop. Ask what area was measured, whether the table was supported in a prescribed configuration and what happens when modules are joined.

The useful buying question is whether the system can locate your particular assembly within its required tolerance. A small flatness number in an advertisement does not tell you the accuracy of an overhanging frame, a clamped component or a finished weldment.

Modular joints deserve their own inspection

Two blocks placed next to each other create a larger area, but the junction becomes part of the working reference. Langmuir publishes a dedicated precision joining procedure for ArcFlat. Ordinary assembly bolts are not interchangeable with a documented alignment system simply because they fasten the blocks together.

Price the appropriate joining hardware and support arrangement before deciding a pair of smaller modules is the cheaper route. Ask how the joint is checked after relocation and whether the manufacturer’s combined-surface claim applies to your planned layout.

Handling and future changes can decide the purchase

Think through the path from delivery to the final work position. Does the order include legs? Can the unit pass through the doorway? What equipment is needed to lift it without using fixture holes as improvised lifting points? These questions can eliminate an otherwise attractive model.

A replaceable working plate, removable slats or expandable modular system may suit a shop that expects its work to change. Check which components the manufacturer actually sells separately. A photograph of a bolted assembly is not a guarantee of replacement-part availability.

Treat repairability as a support question

Avoid choosing steel on the assumption that any damage can be repaired by welding, or cast iron on the assumption that it can never be damaged. A structural repair and restoration of a precision reference surface are different tasks. Ask the supplier how it handles gouges, damaged bores, cracked components and worn finishes.

Our preference between otherwise suitable systems is the one with clearer drawings, compatible tooling and a credible repair or replacement route. That is a buying judgment about ownership, not an independent laboratory ranking of the metals.

  • Compare the same usable work area and number of working faces.
  • Keep table-only and table-with-legs prices separate.
  • Include required clamps, joining kits and handling costs.
  • Request the exact flatness scope rather than comparing headline decimals.

The better table is the complete system that supports and locates your work, with an ownership plan you can actually use.

No. Compare the manufacturer’s measured tolerance and its scope on the exact models. Material alone is not a flatness specification.

Can I combine cast-iron and steel table sections?

Only a documented system or an appropriately engineered design can establish the connection and resulting support. Matching surface height does not establish alignment accuracy or fixture compatibility.
