“Precision” is not a measurement. A useful welding-table flatness claim gives a tolerance and the area over which it applies. Without both, two attractive specification sheets may be describing different things.
Flatness also differs from level. A flat top may be tilted, while a table adjusted level at selected points can still have a distorted surface. Leveling feet and a machined top address different questions.
Read the full statement, including the area
Strong Hand publishes a flatness notation of ±0.005 inch per 24 × 24-inch area for its referenced 5/8-inch systems. Rhino Cart has its own published figure of ±0.015 inch per 24 × 24 inches. Those numbers belong to their named products, not every table in the brand’s catalog.
When another seller lists a tolerance without an area, ask for clarification. Do not silently treat a local specification as applying across the full diagonal, and do not rewrite a manufacturer’s plus/minus notation into a different tolerance convention without its measurement definition.
Match accuracy to the part you need to locate
Sketch where the workpiece actually contacts the table. A small bracket uses a different portion of the reference surface from a long rectangular frame. If it sits on raised fixtures, the fixture surfaces and their positioning also enter the problem.
Set acceptance requirements from the part drawing or the work you need to perform. A hobby project without a numerical tolerance does not need an invented precision target. A production component with a specified tolerance needs more than a seller’s assurance that a table is flat enough for welding.
Plan a receiving check before the return window closes
Ask the supplier how the top should be supported and checked on arrival. Inspect for shipping damage, debris and obvious raised defects before putting a finished component on it. Photograph suspect areas and record the model and serial information.
A suitable straightedge and feeler gauges can help investigate a suspected gap, but a casual check is not a certified full-surface survey. Tool accuracy, temperature, support and measurement method affect the result. If acceptance depends on a small tolerance, agree on the method and equipment with the supplier before ordering.
Do not grind a high spot before identifying it
A spatter deposit or trapped debris is different from a deformed working surface. Use the maker’s approved cleaning procedure to establish what you are seeing. Grinding a precision face can remove original material and complicate a warranty claim.
If the table rocks or the frame has been assembled unevenly, address the prescribed installation conditions first. Keep surface damage, support adjustment and measurement in separate notes so the supplier can diagnose the actual issue.
A larger joined surface has additional conditions
Adding a module introduces a joint and more supports. Langmuir’s ArcFlat precision joining instructions include a dedicated alignment process; bolting two blocks together is not enough to establish the same accuracy claim.
Before ordering extensions, request the assembled-surface specification and the adjustment procedure. Check whether the stated result requires a particular kit, orientation or support arrangement. The money saved by buying modules is less compelling if the combined surface cannot meet the job’s requirement.

- Keep the joined-table claim separate from a single-module claim.
Compare the tolerance, its measurement area and the installation conditions as one specification.
