The material decision has two layers: what carries the work, and what surface the work touches. A nitrided steel table is still a steel table; nitriding is a surface treatment. A stainless cover over a bench does not establish that the bench is suitable for welding.
For a first purchase, narrow the choice by the fabrication you actually do. Then compare construction, fixture system and care requirements within that group.
Steel is a broad category, not a single specification
Plain steel appears in both light portable tables and substantial fixturing systems. Strong Hand’s 5/8-inch range includes plain medium-carbon-steel and nitrided options. The word steel therefore tells you little about precision, surface treatment or the work the complete table is rated to support.
Ask whether the working face is raw, coated or treated, whether the manufacturer publishes flatness, and how it expects you to maintain the surface. A replacement top should be identified by its exact material and finish, not simply advertised as an upgrade.
Cast iron buys a different construction choice
Cast-iron table systems may use a ribbed block, a one-piece table or a mixed-material structure. Fireball’s FA75 family, for example, includes cast-iron designs as well as a cast-iron support with a nitrided tool-steel top. Do not assume the visible frame and working face are the same material.
If a cast table is on the shortlist, compare its working faces, assembly method, delivery weight and extension system. Those details are more useful than a blanket claim that all cast iron is more accurate than all steel.
A surface treatment is not permission to neglect the table
A treated face can have its own cleaning requirements. Siegmund separates surface maintenance, spatter protection and bore cleaning in its instructions. Use the procedure for the table you buy rather than transferring advice for bare plate to a precision finish.
Ask whether the top is replaceable and whether the maker permits resurfacing. It is better to know the approved repair route before an accidental gouge than to discover that grinding it away changes the reference surface.
Stainless and aluminum work need a material-handling plan
If most of your work is stainless steel, evaluate the whole contact path: storage, clamps, supports, brushes and the table. A specialist work surface can be useful, but it cannot keep a component clean if the same contaminated tooling is returned to the station.
For aluminum fabrication, the table does not have to be aluminum merely because the workpiece is. Choose support and fixtures around the component’s geometry and finish requirements, then follow the welding procedure’s cleaning requirements. Do not mistake an ordinary utility bench for a welding table
A stainless kitchen bench, painted workbench or aluminum assembly station may be sold for entirely different work. Look for explicit manufacturer approval for your intended process and operating conditions. Appearance and a metal surface do not establish that approval.
OSHA identifies base metals, coatings and residues among factors affecting welding fume. Knowing what is on the work area is therefore part of process planning; ventilation and fire precautions cannot be inferred from the tabletop material.
