An extension can mean three different things: a support under long stock, an accessory that projects the fixture surface, or another table joined into a larger top. Those arrangements should not share one assumed capacity or accuracy claim.

Choose the type by the missing function. Supporting the end of a long tube does not necessarily require a continuous precision work surface.

Support for overhang

A separate support can carry a projecting portion of a workpiece when it is designed and positioned for the job. Its height, stability and permitted load need to suit the complete arrangement. Do not let a nominally matching height substitute for checking contact with the actual workpiece.

Plan how stock will be loaded and removed as well as held. Long material can change the handling requirements of a small table. The table and support instructions should govern the arrangement; no single overhang allowance applies to every shape and setup.

An attached fixture extension

A bracket or extension plate can provide additional fixture locations beyond the top. Look for the exact mounting hardware, approved orientation and rated use. A table’s total capacity does not automatically apply to an accessory at the edge.

The farther a load acts from its support, the more important the approved geometry becomes. Avoid assigning a usable capacity by dividing the table rating or borrowing a figure from another extension in the same brand range.

Joining tops is an alignment task

Two flat tops are not necessarily coplanar when placed together. The interface, leg adjustment and connecting hardware affect the combined surface. A seam may also interrupt the positions where a fixture or workpiece can sit.

Langmuir distinguishes simply joining ArcFlat blocks from using its precision joining kit to preserve the documented multi-block result. Its kit instructions include an interface-alignment process. That is a model-specific procedure, not a generic recipe for bolting arbitrary welding tables together.

Check the pattern across the joint

If a fixture is expected to span two tops, confirm both the hole system and the spacing across the seam. Matching diameter and pitch on each individual block does not alone establish that the assembled grid remains continuous at the join.

Also inspect sidewall access and the underside after installation. A joining plate can occupy the same space needed for a clamp or locking bolt. Plan the intended fixture layout before deciding where the tables connect.

Make expansion part of the first purchase

For a modular system, ask what the expansion kit contains, whether additional legs are required and how the manufacturer defines flatness after assembly. Keep that measurement scope in the comparison; a local flatness specification is not automatically a whole-workstation guarantee.

If expansion is occasional, compare the setup and storage work against purchasing a larger table. A useful extension should solve the infrequent large job without making every small job harder to load, fixture or reach.

Decide whether you need support, extra fixture positions or a larger aligned surface; each requires a different expansion solution.

Can I bolt two welding tables together?

Only use a joining arrangement supported for the exact tables and intended work. Bolting them together does not automatically preserve alignment, load capacity or a continuous fixture grid.

Does an extension have the same capacity as the table?

Do not assume that. Use the extension’s own rating and installation conditions, including any support legs or orientation requirements.
