A vise can add a useful holding station to a welding table, provided the table and mount support the intended use. Finding bolts that pass through existing holes is only the geometric part of the job.
The decisive question is whether the complete assembly is approved for the forces and operations you plan. A static table load rating does not establish suitability for hammering, bending or other force applied through a vise.
Define the vise work before choosing the mount
Holding a small part for assembly and applying substantial leverage to stock are different uses. Write down the actual tasks, the length of projecting material and whether the vise needs to rotate. Those requirements affect the table choice as much as the vise size.
Check the vise manual for permitted work and mounting instructions. Check the table manual separately for restrictions on dynamic loads or modifications. The Klutch welding-table manual, for example, specifically warns about dynamic loading; a generic pounds-capacity comparison misses that issue.
Map the base rather than matching one hole
Obtain the vise’s mounting pattern and compare every required fastener position with the table. Include bolt-head access, washers or other specified hardware, and clearance below the top. A mount secured through only the convenient holes may not follow the vise instructions.
A manufacturer-approved adapter can provide a removable interface, but its exact table compatibility and intended use still matter. Do not treat an arbitrary plate spanning several holes as a load-rated adapter.
Check the working envelope with the jaws open
Place a cardboard outline of the vise where you intend to mount it. Add the open-jaw position, handle travel and the material extending from the jaws. At an edge, verify that long stock can hang or project as intended without meeting the apron, shelf or legs.
For a swiveling base, include the positions you actually expect to use. Keep the path to table controls, wheel locks and exits unobstructed. A convenient mounting location can become inconvenient once a long part is gripped.
Folding and mobile tables need extra scrutiny
A vise adds weight and can shift the practical handling of a portable table. Confirm that it can remain mounted during folding or movement; otherwise plan a documented removal and storage method. Do not assume a folded carrying handle was designed for an added vise.
Wheel locks address motion only within their design. They do not convert every mobile table into a suitable base for high-leverage work. If the manufacturer does not approve the proposed operation, choose equipment intended for it rather than relying on a heavier-looking vise mount.
Protect the table’s other jobs
A permanent vise consumes usable area and may block fixture positions. A supported removable system can preserve the top for large assemblies, but removal hardware must remain accessible and components must be stored where they will not damage the precision surface.
Before buying, ask the table supplier a specific question: can this vise, on this mount, be used for these operations on this exact table? That is more useful than asking whether the tabletop is “strong enough.”
Confirm the intended vise operation with both manufacturers before designing the connection around whichever holes happen to line up.
