A good fixture layout answers three questions before the first tack: what establishes the part’s position, what holds it there, and how will the assembly leave the fixture afterward? Putting a clamp in every available hole does not answer those questions.
The example here is a planning method for a small rectangular tube frame. It does not specify weld procedure, structural capacity or acceptance tolerances for a finished product.
Choose the faces you will measure from
Select the reference faces that matter to the drawing or intended fit. For a simple rectangle, that might be one long outside edge and one adjacent end. Use the part drawing to decide; do not automatically make every outside surface a fixed reference.
Check the stock before building the fixture around it. Burrs, inconsistent cuts and debris under a tube can make a carefully arranged set of stops locate the wrong surface. The fixture should not hide problems that belong to preparation.
Place supports before applying pressure
Identify where the pieces rest and where clamp pads will bear. Keep the work stable on the intended references, with support appropriate to the part and fixture design. Avoid relying on a pressure pad to pull an unsupported piece into the desired plane.
If you lift the work on risers, include their height in clamp capacity and access checks. Record which risers belong in each position so a later setup is not rebuilt from a mixture of similar-looking parts.
Locate the frame without trapping it
Arrange the locating stops so the pieces can be placed against the chosen reference edges. Consider which stop or bracket needs to be removable once the frame is assembled. A fixed perimeter around every side can leave no convenient extraction direction.
The grid provides convenient starting locations, while adjustable stops allow fine positioning. Measure the actual part location after tightening the fixtures; hole numbers alone are not a finished dimension.
Reserve access for the work sequence
Mark every joint that needs access and inspect the space for the torch, filler where applicable, hands and measuring tools. Turn clamp handles through their working travel during the dry layout. A clamp body can clear a joint while its handle cannot.
Consider each stage of assembly, including turning the work if the approved procedure requires it. Thermal movement and weld sequence need to be addressed by the welding procedure; a fixture does not guarantee that the cooled assembly will retain its original dimensions.
Document the setup you actually verified
Photograph the arrangement and record the table orientation, locating holes, accessory part numbers, adjustable stop positions and inspection dimensions. Give removable elements names or numbers so the sequence is understandable when the fixture is rebuilt.
- Check the first assembled part against its specified dimensions.
- Record any fixture adjustment made after that check.
- Inspect contact surfaces before repeating the setup.
- Include the removal path in the setup notes.
Repeatability has a maintenance cost
Spatter or damaged locating surfaces can alter where the next part sits. A repeat job needs inspection of the fixture as well as a record of its original position. Use the table and tooling manufacturer’s cleaning methods rather than grinding away material from a precision contact surface.
Keep setup time and inspection time separate when judging whether another accessory is worthwhile. A useful adjustable stop may save repeated measuring; an extra clamp that makes loading awkward may add work instead.
Design the locating, holding and removal steps together, then document the measured setup rather than just the hole numbers.

Do I need a stop at every corner?
No universal arrangement suits every part. Locate from the required reference faces, maintain stable support and leave a way to remove the assembly.
Does a fixture prevent weld distortion?
It can constrain a part during a particular setup, but it does not guarantee the cooled result. Joint design, process, sequence and inspection still matter.
