The clamp commonly called a “ground clamp” is part of the welding circuit. That everyday name can obscure a critical distinction: carrying welding current back to the machine is a different function from protective electrical grounding.

A metal table does not resolve both functions simply because a cable is attached to it. Start with the power source’s manual and the table’s instructions, then have installation or bonding questions addressed by a qualified person.

Two connections with different jobs

The work lead and its clamp provide the return side of the intended welding circuit. Protective grounding concerns the electrical installation and equipment safety. Connecting the work clamp does not prove that the machine, supply or workstation has the grounding required for its installation.

Miller’s maintenance guidance discusses grounding separately from sound weld-circuit connections. It also identifies workpiece grounding as a matter governed by applicable requirements and qualified assessment. Avoid universal advice to add a ground rod, attach a wire to a building pipe or remove an existing bond.

Read the table diagram before choosing a clamp point

Some manufacturers supply a deliberate work connection. Miller’s cited table manual instructs connection to table plates and provides additional instructions for its optional positioning arm. That is useful evidence that a table arrangement can require more than an arbitrary clamp on a leg.

It is not evidence that every table or positioner uses the same route. Find the instructions for the accessories actually installed. If a used table has an unexplained tab, wire or connection, identify it rather than assuming its purpose from its shape.

Do not assume contact through the table is adequate

Work resting on a metal top is not the same as a verified connection. The intended arrangement must provide the sound contact required by the equipment instructions. Paint, contamination, intervening supports and the fixture layout are reasons to examine the path rather than rely on appearance.

When a manual specifies connection to the workpiece, follow its placement guidance. When it permits a table connection, check all parts of that arrangement. A clamp on the table should not become a habit that overrides a changed project or accessory.

Check the circuit without turning troubleshooting into an experiment

Inspect the work lead, connector and clamp using the power source’s shutdown and maintenance procedure. Damaged insulation, loose components, visible burning or unexpected heating need attention before continued use. Changing current settings is not a repair for a defective connection.

If an arc marks the table where the work touches, or a connection behaves differently after rearranging fixtures, stop and have the setup examined. Do not test suspected protective-ground faults by touching the equipment or disconnecting safety conductors. Electrical diagnosis belongs with someone qualified to perform it.

Treat TIG high-frequency instructions as a separate requirement

Where a TIG machine uses high-frequency starting, its installation and interference-control instructions may add specific requirements. The work clamp is not a universal remedy for those concerns. Use the actual machine manual rather than a grounding sketch written for a different power source.

A useful handover note records the machine model, table model, relevant accessory and manual diagram being followed. This makes future changes easier to review and avoids leaving the next user to infer why a wire was installed.

Identify the intended work-return path and the separate protective-grounding requirements; never substitute one for the other.

Is the welding ground clamp the same as earth ground?

No. The work-return clamp carries welding current in the intended circuit. Protective grounding has a separate electrical-safety function and must meet the installation requirements.

Should I clamp to the table or directly to the workpiece?

Use the equipment instructions for that setup. A designated table connection is model-specific; it is not permission to assume adequate contact through every fixture or workpiece.
