A welding table is clean enough for the next job when debris no longer interferes with the intended contact, fixture seating or layout—and the cleaning method has not damaged the surface. Polishing every mark away can work against that goal.
Separate loose debris, adhered spatter, oily residue and actual surface damage. They are different problems, and one aggressive tool is unlikely to be the right answer to all four.
Prepare for cleaning as a separate task
End the operation and follow the equipment’s shutdown instructions. Allow hot work and surfaces to cool before handling or applying products, and make their status clear to anyone sharing the area. Identify the table finish and the approved maintenance instructions before starting.
Remove accessories only when they can be handled safely and the work is properly supported. Photograph unusual damage before cleaning changes its appearance. If a part is stuck, forced removal may obscure the cause or damage the table further.
Clear loose material before assessing the top
Use the manufacturer’s recommended debris-removal method. Include edges, slots, removable plates and the areas underneath fixtures where practical under the instructions. A surface that appears clear from above may still have material preventing an accessory from seating.
Once the loose material is gone, inspect the remaining mark. Distinguish a deposit on the top from a pit, scratch or deformation in it. More abrasion is not automatically the next step when a mark remains visible.
Treat adhered spatter within the finish instructions
Siegmund’s maintenance system includes a specified oilstone for its tables and separate products for spatter management. That does not authorize an arbitrary abrasive or a grinder on another manufacturer’s precision surface. Use the approved tool and procedure for the table you own.
If a deposit cannot be removed by the stated routine, ask for manufacturer guidance. Keeping the working surface within its intended geometry is more important than erasing every cosmetic sign of use. Do not extend a light maintenance technique into an improvised resurfacing operation.
Choose cleaners by documented compatibility and hazards
Read the cleaner’s instructions and safety data before applying it. Establish whether it is approved for the top, its treatment and any accessories being cleaned. Follow the specified application and readiness-for-use conditions; do not invent a drying interval.
OSHA requires precautions for cleaning compounds because they may be toxic or flammable. It also addresses chlorinated cleaning vapors around welding. Do not select a brake cleaner or solvent solely because it removes grease, or allow cleaning elsewhere to introduce prohibited vapors into a welding area.
A label such as nonchlorinated is not a complete safety approval. Other hazards and compatibility limits still apply. Keep chemical cleaning distinct from active hot work and follow the relevant product and equipment instructions.
Check holes and accessories without altering their fit
Use the bore-cleaning method intended for the system. Siegmund lists dedicated brushes as part of its care range. Avoid forcing a fixture into a contaminated hole or modifying the bore to accept a component that may be the wrong size.
Recheck an accessory that previously seated correctly. If it still will not fit after approved cleaning, inspect for damage and confirm the part identity. Diameter, pitch and locking or grip geometry are separate compatibility questions; cleaning cannot fix a mismatch.
Finish with a condition decision
Apply any approved post-use protection and record what must be done before the table is heated again. Return only serviceable fixtures to storage. Keep unresolved damage visible in the equipment record rather than disguising it beneath a protective film.
If a cleaned area now reveals pitting, a raised defect or a distorted slot, stop treating it as ordinary dirt. The next action is an assessment of serviceability or repair, especially where work depends on the table’s dimensional accuracy.
Identify the contaminant, use the finish-approved method and treat remaining geometry or fit problems as damage to assess—not dirt to grind away.

Can I use brake cleaner on a welding table?
Do not choose it by name alone. Chlorinated cleaning vapors are specifically hazardous around welding, and other formulations can have their own hazards. Use a cleaner approved for the surface and follow its safety data and instructions.
Should I use an angle grinder to clean the top?
Not as a routine method on a precision surface. Use the table manufacturer’s prescribed tools and procedure; removing base material can change the surface you rely on.
