Slots let an attachment move along an opening. A hole grid gives fixtures a series of defined locations. The practical difference shows up when you position clamps, repeat a setup and reach the underside—not simply when you look at the top.
Some tables combine slots and holes. Evaluate the actual pattern and supported accessories instead of forcing every design into one category.
What a slot is useful for
A slot can offer continuous adjustment in its direction, making it convenient to bring an appropriate clamp toward a joint without moving to the next hole. The adjustment available across the slot is different from the travel along it.
Slot width and clamp design still have to match. Strong Hand’s Nomad, for example, is a slotted portable table with its own documented dimensions. Its openings should not be mistaken for a standard bore-grid fixture system.
What a grid adds to repeat jobs
A grid gives you reference positions that can be recorded when a fixture is dismantled. Stops and brackets can be returned to identified holes, then checked against the required part dimensions.
The grid does not make a finished assembly accurate without measurement. Hole tolerance, fixture clearance, surface condition and the workpiece all affect the setup. A drilled pattern on a light folding table is not equivalent to a documented precision system simply because the photographs look similar.
Clamp access can matter more than the pattern
Look underneath the candidate table. Crossmembers, shelves and folded-leg hardware may obstruct a clamp at the position you want. A photograph from above will not reveal whether there is room to install a nut or operate a locking mechanism.
Also check the table edge. Ordinary edge clamps may be useful with either surface, but only where their throat and opening fit the edge construction. A deep apron can rule out a clamp that easily fits the top plate itself.
Choose with a representative layout
Draw one recurring project at scale and mark the points that must be held. Add a realistic outline for each clamp, not just a dot at its contact pad. Then mark where the torch and your hands need to pass.

Openings are not a fume-control specification
Holes and slots can let debris pass through, but neither establishes an extraction system. OSHA’s welding-fume guidance bases controls on the process, material and exposure conditions. Do not treat an open-pattern top as a substitute for those controls.
For shopping purposes, compare surface pattern separately from portability, supported load and finish. A table may win on convenient clamping yet lose on the footprint or stability your workspace requires.

Questions & answers
Can regular clamps work on a perforated table?
An edge clamp can work where its opening and throat suit the table edge. Inserting a clamp into a hole or slot requires a design intended for that opening.
Do slots make a table less accurate?
The pattern alone does not answer that. Compare the manufacturer’s flatness and dimensional specifications, including their measurement scope.
