A homemade clamp often starts with a useful idea: move an ordinary clamp away from the table edge. The difficult part is the new connection. Cutting off a jaw and adding a pin changes how force reaches the table, even if the screw and handle remain familiar.
Separate making a fixture layout from manufacturing the clamp itself. You may be able to solve the awkward holding position with compatible pins, stops, spacers or a documented clamp accessory while keeping the clamping tool intact.
Identify the problem before modifying a tool
Sketch the part, its supports and the point where pressure must be applied. If the clamp cannot reach, determine whether the limitation is throat depth, opening, handle clearance or the table attachment. A longer arm does not necessarily solve the same problem as a different mounting point.
For a tube frame, for example, a corner may need an accessible stop and a separate downward clamp. Making one elaborate homemade tool perform both tasks can complicate placement and removal. Try the arrangement with suitable existing tools before committing to fabrication.
A pin fitting a hole is only one part of compatibility
Record the actual hole system, top thickness and underside clearance. The pin or attachment needs the engagement arrangement specified for the tool and table. A loose piece of round bar that enters the hole does not demonstrate that it will restrain the proposed clamp.
Nominal inch and metric labels need care: 5/8 inch equals 15.875 mm, not exactly 16 mm. Some manufacturers explicitly approve particular combinations; follow that exact statement. Do not generalize from one approved accessory to homemade parts or another table system.
Do not carry the original rating across a modification
A published clamping-force figure describes the manufacturer’s tool and stated conditions. It does not establish the strength of a cut rail, a welded-on pin or a new mounting plate. The modified connection needs its own design assessment, including the material and intended forces.
Unknown steel, damaged threads, an improvised pressure pad or a poorly supported workpiece add separate uncertainties. Inspecting an assembly and finding that it holds one scrap part is not a basis for assigning it a general force rating. Do not use an unverified homemade clamp as lifting equipment or as the sole restraint for a hazardous load.
Look for a documented way to move the clamping point

Confirm the exact model and table compatibility rather than treating every optional part as universal.

This is a manufacturer-described combination, not permission to copy its dimensions onto an unrelated clamp. Ask for the specified parts and installation details.

Keep removable fixtures removable
A removable layout lets you revise the job without altering the tabletop or clamp. Check that spacers and stops remain stable as force is applied, and that the arrangement leaves weld access and a way to release the finished part. More tightening is not a substitute for support beneath the contact point.
Tacking a stop or clamp component directly to a purchased table changes the surface and may conflict with its care or use instructions. Obtain the table maker’s direction before doing it. Do not assume grinding the tack away will restore the original surface condition or geometry.
Decide whether fabrication is still worthwhile
Price the compatible tool or accessory beside the material, machining and assessment needed for the custom approach. A one-off fixture may be useful when it solves a particular assembly, but that does not require every clamping component to be homemade.
If you pursue a custom tool, keep its drawings, identified materials and assessed use limits with it. Do not market an experiment to yourself as an all-purpose clamp. When the design or connection remains uncertain, choose a documented holding arrangement instead.
Solve the holding position first. Prefer documented connections and compatible accessories where they meet the need; a modified clamp needs its own assessment, not the original tool’s assumed rating.

Can I cut an F-clamp and weld a pin onto it?
That alteration creates a different tool. The original clamp rating cannot establish the capacity of the cut and welded connection. Obtain an appropriate design assessment or use a compatible manufactured table clamp.
Can homemade 16 mm pins fit a 5/8-inch table?
The nominal dimensions differ, and diameter alone is insufficient. Use the table and accessory manufacturer’s exact compatibility and engagement requirements; do not force a pin or enlarge the table holes to make an uncertain pairing fit.
Is making stops the same as making clamps?
No. A stop locates a part while a clamp applies holding force. Both need appropriate support, but solving a locating problem may let you retain an existing documented clamp rather than fabricate its force-bearing parts.
