A garage layout drawn around only the tabletop misses most of the occupied space. The useful footprint includes the operator, clamps, long stock, equipment, extraction and a route for moving an assembly out.
Begin with the jobs you expect to handle and the hazards already in the garage. A larger table is not an improvement if it forces welding next to stored fuel, blocks an exit or leaves no practical way to control fumes.
Draw the largest ordinary job, not just the furniture
Mark the table in its working position, then add the project’s full outline. Include doors, drawers, clamp handles and anything that extends beyond the edge. Next trace how the work gets from storage onto the top and back out. This exposes awkward turns and blocked approaches before equipment is installed.
A folding table needs two plans: its stored position and its fully deployed working position. A mobile table also needs a suitable operating location. Being able to roll it into a gap does not establish that the gap is a usable welding area.
Treat woodworking and household storage as active constraints
Look under benches, behind shelving and on the other side of nearby walls or openings. Sawdust, rags, cardboard and stored chemicals can make a convenient corner unsuitable. A metal tabletop addresses only one part of the fire problem.
OSHA’s general-industry hot-work rule considers both nearby combustibles and hazards reached through openings or by conducted heat. Its familiar 35-foot combustible-relocation provision, where practicable, is not a universal safe radius. Use an appropriate hot-work assessment rather than drawing a circle and assuming everything outside it is protected.
In a garage that alternates between woodworking and welding, the changeover needs its own plan. If combustible debris cannot be removed and remaining hazards properly controlled, move the work to a suitable location instead of relying on a sheet draped over the woodworking bench.
Reserve a ventilation arrangement before fixing the table position
Consider where the fume will be captured, where replacement air comes from and where discharge goes. A location beside an open garage door is not proof of effective control. OSHA notes that even outdoor work may need exposure controls.
Discuss the expected process, metals, coatings and workpiece shapes with the extraction supplier or a competent exposure assessor. A capture arm that cannot reach the joint after a large frame is clamped down may be poorly suited to the layout. Keep discharge away from places where it could expose other people.
Give equipment a defined place without narrowing the exit
Keep the route out usable while the actual project is on the table. Plan cable and hose runs so normal movement does not require stepping over or pulling on them. Do not depend on remembering an obstruction hidden by a helmet.
Where shielding-gas cylinders are used, follow the supplier and equipment instructions for upright securing, handling and placement. Miller’s home-shop guidance calls for secured cylinders and orderly equipment. An unsecured cylinder beside a mobile table is not part of a finished layout.

Walk through the layout before the first weld
Use a cold, unpowered mock-up of a typical project to check reach, viewing position and handling. This is a layout exercise, not a substitute for training or the hot-work assessment. Confirm who controls access, how nearby people are protected and where suitable fire equipment will be available.
If the arrangement only works with the door blocked, the screen moved aside or the extractor left out, revise it. Useful table space is the space that remains after these requirements have been accommodated.
Choose the table location only after the project, escape route, combustible hazards and fume-control arrangement fit together.

How much space do I need around a welding table?
There is no single clearance that resolves every project and hazard. Plan the operator’s movement, workpiece overhang, handling route, equipment, exits and the fire and ventilation controls for the actual location.
Can welding and woodworking share a garage?
A shared space needs effective control of combustible dust, stored materials, hot work and exposure to others. If those controls cannot be achieved, use a different location; a metal cover alone does not make the woodworking area suitable.
Is opening the garage door enough ventilation?
Do not assume so. Required controls depend on the process, material, contaminants and airflow at the operator. Assess the job and extraction arrangement.
